Welcome to the J24 2021 US Nationals. This will be the first time that we have hosted this event and the Malletts Bay Boat Club and the Greater Burlington area are great places to visit, so you should plan on bringing your family along to the regatta. There are many things to do in the area: hiking, biking, shopping, museums, restaurants, and many great tourist places to visit. This weekend is the beginning of Leaf Peeper season. Local accommodations are in high demand. If you think you may come make sure to make reservations early.
We will have great open course racing in the outer Malletts Bay, The primary sailing area will be the "Outer Bay" the same course where the 2009 Lightning Worlds were sailed.. The secondary racing area will be the "Inner Bay" only if the conditions require. Chart
The Outer Bay is a nearly circular, 4.5 miles wide bay, that is almost completely separated from Lake Champlain by an auto causeway to the north, and a railroad fill to the west. With an average water depth of 70 feet, this configuration provides an excellent body of water for racing with "wind appropriate" wave heights and minimal powerboat traffic. It will take 35 minutes to 45 minutes to sail/motor out to the course area, depending on the wind strength and direction.
The Inner Bay is also a circular bay, but is only a little over 1.3 miles across. There is a large peninsula "Coates Island" that extends into the bay from the west and can affect the wind on that part of the bay. The "Inner Bay" course area will feature very flat water, and shifty sailing conditions. We would only use this venue if the "Outer Bay" is not sailable. It is unlikely that we would sail in the Inner Bay, but it will be kept as an option.
The entry fee includes continental breakfasts at the club Friday Saturday and Sunday mornings and dinner and a party Saturday night at the club. There will be live entertainment and dancing. (Don't worry, "live entertainment" is not just watching Fleet 23 members juggling or repairing boats).
We pride ourselves in the quality of our Race Committee, having hosted both the Lightning North Americans and World Championship events, as well as the Laser Nationals. We are all one design sailors and have many years experience running championship races. We will provide the following RC Services:
One primary RC boats used for starting and finishing.
Three boats to manage mark placement
A judge boat
An observation boat
There are lots of hotels and motels in the area as well as camping, bed and breakfasts. You should make your reservations early, September is a busy time in Vermont with the beginning of Leaf Peeping.
All registration will be done on-line and there is a discount for registering before August 16, 2021. Register early!!!
